Location, location, location. That’s what it’s all about, right? Or is it?
Maybe in real estate. And maybe for some aspects of photography, it does matter. But when it comes to getting dope photos of you and your partner, where we get them doesn’t predict how they’ll turn out.
Of course, if given a choice, I’ll always take a more picturesque option. Who wouldn’t choose a sprawling, lush garden over a cramped back alley? But I don’t need a ton of space or a manicured lawn to make it work.
All I need is some creative thinking, a relaxed approach, and the experience I’ve gained from my years working as a wedding photographer.
Here’s a little bit more about how I get great photos no matter the location.
Whether on your wedding day or during an engagement session, I like to stay flexible. No, not as in I’m doing stretches in the middle of the floor – lol! I’m saying that to get great photos no matter the location, I remain adaptable. I go into the space with an open mind.
And I’m really good at moving furniture around. Whether it’s the guy’s hotel room, a first look spot, portraits around the venue, wherever!
I’ve worked weddings where we completely changed the plans to do the first look at the girls’ getting ready location instead of the guys’ because there were more options available. But if the wedding planner had told me that it wasn’t possible to make changes, I already had a plan in place to make the first location work. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
For me, lighting is more important than the background. So, instead of searching for the most pristine settings, I look for the best light to put my couples in, and I make the background work for us.
Of course, the more lit a space is, the better. But I really only need a good window and a corner. Then there are those venues with darker areas that still look beautiful, especially by candlelight, like the Civic Theatre and Il Mercato.
If we’re outside, awesome! There are all kinds of light to work with.
I’m also more focused on your connection with each other and making sure that we can get genuine emotions. Because that’s where the real magic happens.
I could be photographing the most beautiful backdrop in the world, but if the couple isn’t comfortable or they’re in a bad mood or what have you, then the location just doesn’t matter. That’s not what’s going to come through in the photo. People will look at the picture and say, “Oh, what’s going on here? Joey looks a million miles away.”
I think the authenticity of the moment and your love for each other is what matters most. I want you to be able to look back at these photos and feel good about them, too. Not just because the location was epic but because you two felt your absolute best.
To help you do that, I’ll be the laid-back dude in the background, casually snapping some photos, going with the flow of the day, but making sure all is well and on time. When needed (or requested), I’ll provide guidance and remind you to relax and have fun.
You’re getting married, after all!
Where do you plan on having your wedding? Wherever the location, I’d love to take the photos. Let’s chat!
